Work 2.0
Work 2.0
Whatever the phenomenon of the human experience causes us to romanticize and upgrade our experiences, I like to enjoy my journey as somehow improving each time. Then much like a hangover regret or guilt or general dumbness kicks us back into reality
I found myself disinterested in chasing mail rooms and fending off UPS and FedEx which frankly often times fend themselves off but that’s for another time and someone else’s rant.
As my flawed memory serves, my Star Tac rang one day, and a recruiter asked if I was considering a change. Not being long from starting my illustrious sales career, getting this call was what I would imagine happens in the NBA G league when a player is laboring in Grand Rapids or Des Moines (no insult to either) and the 14-62 Hornets call because they want to test the waters with some new blood and honestly whatever stars are there want to sit.
The conversation flowed from my accomplishments to my goals and to the question…
Would you be interested in Technology Sales? Specifically, Business Telephone systems?
As an early adopter and lover of Tech I said yes and it launched a second phase for me.
We had a small but extremely efficient team – One BDR Barry who was like talking to Santa. He generated leads with a gentile spirit. Always explaining he was the match maker, and they would love us. That is a hard role and underappreciated. With the growth in software sales, companies often amass under trained herds and then slaughter them to find the survivors. Managers TAKE NOTE- figure out ways to encourage and uplift those employees and design Comp plans and opportunities to help them continue to improve.
It was there I met a lifelong friend that managed the office. His destiny was ultimately Restaurants, but he would be a winner anywhere.
A huge part of the tech sales process is installation, training and customer success. Errol was our Lead. He was never impatient, never gave up and always smiled. Clients don’t often tell you that you are great but they sure as hell to you something is wrong and then tell their friends. The install team took so much pride that we probably didn’t see more than 1-2 problems out of 10 sales. That’s teamwork, process, preparation and dedication to doing it RIGHT.
I loved this crew but the company took a turn and closed the office. Eh Well.

Send those stories good and bad – It’s important to share for a lesson or a laugh or just knowing that sometimes you aren’t alone when the shit hits the fan.
